My uncle, colleague and friend, Andrew Kapaga Dachi, has passed away sometime between yesterday and today. I received the phone call from another colleague today, who does not have the full details of Dachi's death, but he promised to share more information as he received it. This came to me as quite a shock, because it reminded me of what I was thinking only three days. I was thinking whether any on of us is prepared for their own death. What does happen if you dont wake up tomorrow? Are you prepared? I better get started with the preparations, because your Last Day on Earth is Allah's Secret! Only He has knowledge of it, and you are never really prepared. You may die of natural causes - such as diseases, coronary or pulmonary failure, etc. - or by accident. But you will never really know when you will go. That is a fact. Dachi had moved to Botswana, where he established himself as an IT guru and entrepreneur, being based in Franscistown. He commuted to Gaborone - for work projects - on a regular basis. He had also set up a company, called ISA Business Consulting, together with some local partners. He had acquired many clients and with the success, he had ventured into other non-IT projects, such as real estate and entertainment! Dachi was in Tanzania recently during August-September, we worked together on an IT Security project for a public-sector client. He was truly one of the most knowledgeable persons in IT and Data security; he had the mind of a genius. He taught himself ALL that he knew on IT and Data Security. He could scan your entire network and show you all the security weaknesses, and provide you with a solution on how to fix them. This is something that is seriously lacking in many of our private- and public-sector data networks. How I wish Dachi was here to help us find our way in this melee of DDoS attacks (a local network just suffered this earlier today...) and other malicious attacks, such as website defacing, etc. How I wish. I truly respected Dachi, he taught me a lot, mostly, he taught me discipline and patience. He taught me never to give up, especially when things are rough. I will truly miss him. I am sure many of his former colleagues at COSTECH and other entities will too. Innalillahi Wa Innalillahi Raaj'un! eThinkTankTz mourn Andrew dACHI
When the news of the passing of Andrew Dachi Kapaga (ADK) hit the list on 30 September 2010, it set forth a long series of reflections mostly by those having had business acquaintance with the outgoing IT hero. Andrew had been those one of those persons with two self-fanning driving attributes: his insatiable desire to stay abreast with new developments in the trade, and willingness to share--by teaching, practicing and otherwise--with others. This made him popular among superiors, colleagues, trainees and mankind. It would not do justice to let the long list of eulogies posted on eThinkTankTZ pass into "yesternet" unnoticed, therefore I am putting them in their entirety on my blog. There is no doubt that dACHI was a really good person. May his relatives and friends read this and feel pride, such a good man we are missing.

It not only says that we are saddened, but also that we salute the accomplishments of the departed. I worked with dACHI on one assignment in 1998. Indeed, he was a true scholar and a gentleman. May God rest his soul in eternal peace. #17150 From: "DS" Date: Mon Oct 4, 2010 11:43 am Subject: Re: [www.eThinkTankTz.org] Death Announcement: Andrew Kapaga Dachi is no more dsawe Offline Offline Send Email Send Email Hear, hear, That's very well put Arnold. Our departed colleague had indeed many accomplishments to his name. On my side, I'd known Dachi since back in his Costech days, but we lost touch along the way after his move to Botswana. It was back in mid-December 2009 that we were able to get back in contact again, thanks to Facebook, but only for a far too brief exchange of messages. May his soul be blessed with Eternal Peace. DS.

Internet groups and forums
I do subscribe to several Internet groups, in fact I am the owner of some of these. Over time, these groups and forums (or, rather, fora?) have paid dividends. I will enumerate some of these groups here, possibly not in any hierarchy, because it is not possible to use same yardstick to measure a group utility.
Tanzanet.org
A group of Tanzanians and friends of Tanzania. A majority of members live and work or study outside Tanzania. With the base of more than 500, about three quarters of them are listeners, i.e. they read the group without posting. The group is well regulated, there is an annual general meeting that is achieved by email communication and may last for a couple of weks. There is a Constitution. There are office bearers who are elected during election meetings.
The membership is composed of all manners of professionals, from professors to enterpreneurs, grandfathers to fresh graduates. There are arguments every now and then, but they do not lead to enmity or hard feelings.
A number of Tanzanet members live in Tanzania, mostly, like me, around Dar-es-Salaam. Whenever one of us from overseas has to come to Tz for, say, vacation, the message flows on the group, and arrangement is made so that we can meet at some place. An overall favourite for such meetings is Bamboo Bar commonly referred to by the owner's nickname, "Kwa John Fedha" I have never once regretted joining Tanzanet, it is so educative, although with heated topics on, the mailbox fills up daily with 200 messages or more. Tanzanet.org also has forum, but it is much less popular compared to the email group. It mostly serves new subscribers to join the group and some download stuff such as speeches and papers published by members on the Tanzanet.org Journal.
Ethinktanktz.yahoogroups.com
This group started running after year 2000 when lots of ICT users found out Y2K millenium bug was behind them -- for all that came of the premonition, it was "cry wolf" kind of scare.
ETTTz is a group of biggies. It is the group that brings together almost all IT persons in Tanzanian companies. So much help has been offered back and forth. While the group is so handy and useful, we also have misfits who sometimes conduct themselves in unbefitting manners. Usually such noise on the group is shouted down at and ends there and then. ETTTz does not restrict only Tanzanians, therefore there are several subscribers, especially from neignbouring countries.
Driverguide.com
The communitiy I live comprises of believers of computers lasting forever, therefore whenever a computer goes limp, someone looks for some of us cursed with knowledge of terms like IDE, Primary Slave and PCI. Most of ailments of computer requires replacement of hard disk, which necessitates re-installations of drivers of all gadgets such as sound cards. This forum has been a one-stop source of solace, and I shall recommend it any time. It is going to be sometime before we see the last Win98 box on our tables, or a 8-year-old computer on our dining tables (not to be eaten, but part-time furniture in a typical house).
alt.comp.hardware.com
This is one of the hundreds of usenet newsgroups that google salvaged and placed on their servers for easy access. If I were to put down two lines of thext for all positive response I have received from this group, it would fill 100 pages.
In coming posts I'll write something on my experience with running groups.

Nyerere, 10 years today since he went away
I would like every Tanzanian world over to reflect the teachings of Mwalimu Nyerere.
I would like to place all his speeches on the web for us and our children to keep learning from them. Anyone who can assist on this pls let me know. I can host them on my server space.

The Get-together of 14 March
We had settled long ago that we'd make a follow-up get-together when our colleague and real M+ enthusiast, Mr James Zachariah Tano hit the Bongo land.
Well, he did, and we communicated appropriately on M+ list to the effect that we'd meet "nex" Saturday. (Mea Culpa, I didn't specify the date, though some of the absentees would cling to this excuse why they did not show up). The venue had been proposed: Mlimani City, Samaki Samaki Pub.
I was the first to reach the venue. Although we'd talked about 5 pm, I was there at 5.30 (half hour early by African standards). James texted at that time saying he'd be late for 47.314 minutes (Japanese precision?) Then Kilasara showed up almost immediately. I'd also chatted Dunia Yusuph into attending, and he showed up. He's not an alcohol man, so I'd predicted he'd have trouble locating Samaki Samaki, but on the contrary he told me he was a regular visitor of Mlimani City on weekends for movies. Happy Magoha (Professor-to-be) brightened the group with gender representation when she arrived almost at the same time as James.
I, as is normal in these meetings, was the common denominator, so I had introductions to make around: Dunia Yusuph has never been employed by T**DO but knows it very well, as he has done two PT sessions there at different times, first as a Technical College student and later as a UDSM student. Salvatory Kilasara had been a Human Resource Officer who opted to move into a more challenging job in the civil service. Happy Magoha moved to Open University of Tz. James who took up lecturer job like Happy (but at DUSE) when he seiyaed, is presently doing his PhD in Japan, in a city of Kobe.
On the venue: Mlimani city is a huge complex that has shops for all manners of things from fresh onions to motorbikes, and, with the artificial lighting and environment one gets into when one visits there, one gets the feeling of being out of Tanzania, kins of like you are in Schipol duty free or Walmat store. The Samaki Samaki is one of the several side-by-side bars and eateries where customer has to be a king (to afford foods and drinks there). Samaki Samaki, particulsrly is a fish-and-chips specialist that's built to give patrons an aura of seaside without water. Tables and chairs are made out of coconut trunks, counters are made of improvised weatherbeated boats and everything from plates to tablemarker are fish-shaped. I saw James closely examining a toothpick, said he suspected it was of fish shape.
Needless to say, we were all eager to milk orient stories from James, but also spoke a little about T***O, OUTz and other small matters. For meal we took (of course) fish and other sea favourite, prawns. We also were of agreed viewpoint that we ought to make something tangible out of M+, if anyone had an idea s/he should float it on the list.
We parted company ealy--about 8 pm and went our separate ways. While the evening was enjoyable, it would have been even more so if the group was bigger. No OC, no Big Man, no Vitus etc etc. Hopefully we'll get to meet some more in future.

First email, and now, blog!
Blogs have been a new way of sending information across the world easily. If it is worth its salt, the crawlers will pick it up and dangle it for all. Many columnists in world-reknowned papers make their points of view known through their blogs, political leaders are blogging,. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that even some pre-schoolers may already be blogging.
M+ is a group of friends who have more or less to share. A model of M+ is kind of like domino relationship, whereby some members may have not physically met, but have been discussing in an mail forum and selflessly share information such as job slots, training opportunities or even humour.
This blog is intended to enrich those group resources by flavouring it with graphics such as photos, links to free net resources etc.
We do not expect the group to be prolific, as it is more or less a closed one.
